Dutch Oven Cooking, From Origins to Your Campsite

Step back in time and discover one of America's most beloved outdoor cooking traditions during our Hands-On Dutch Oven Cooking Workshop! As part of Ohio's America 250 celebration, the Hocking County Historical Society invites participants to explore the history, techniques, and flavors of Dutch oven cooking that helped feed generations of pioneers, settlers, soldiers, and travelers across the young United States. Join us from 1:00–4:00 PM for an interactive experience where you'll learn the basics of Dutch oven cooking, including proper equipment, fire and coal management, seasoning and care, and time-tested recipes. Participants will work alongside experienced instructors to prepare and sample traditional dishes while gaining a deeper appreciation for this enduring American culinary tradition. In addition to the cooking workshop, the Hocking County Historical Society Museum will host an open house featuring guided tours of the facility. Visitors will have the opportunity to explore exhibits highlighting Hocking County's rich heritage, learn about the people and events that shaped our community, and discover how local history connects to the broader story of America's first 250 years. Guests will also learn about family history research and genealogy resources available through the Historical Society, helping them uncover connections to their own past and the stories of those who helped build our nation and community. A special highlight of the open house will be the opportunity to view the famous Lutz steam-powered automobile, one of Hocking County's most unique historic artifacts and a testament to America's spirit of innovation and transportation history. Whether you're a seasoned camper, history enthusiast, genealogy researcher, or curious beginner, this program offers a unique opportunity to connect with the past through food, stories, artifacts, and personal discovery.
